Consultation & Video Ear Exam
Are you finding it hard to hear? Do your ears feel clogged or itchy? It could be just ear wax! Using our high tech video camera for our hearing specialists at Heroes of Hearing Wellness Center of Tucson can help!
Our mission at Heroes of Hearing has always been the health and wellbeing of our patients. Losing your hearing can feel like losing a part of yourself. We are committed to reconnecting people through the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss.
OUR MISSION
How can routine hearing care help you?
Just as it is recommended we have our teeth and vision checked each year it is essential we have our hearing evaluated. Unlike tooth pain or blurry vision, hearing loss sneaks up on people. They begin to notice that those around them are beginning to mumble or speak more quietly. Often the TV isn’t loud enough although family members complain about the volume. In today’s climate we just blame our loss of understanding on everyone wearing masks!
Our brains are amazing and will compensate for our loss of hearing by telling our eyes to begin reading lips. Then, the brain works overtime ‘filling in the blanks’ with context clues [“What’s the time?”, “Oh, I feel fine!”]. Like the frog in boiling water we may not realize there is a problem - but those around us will.
By having a full Hearing Evaluation performed each year your practitioner will be able to notice these changes over time and make the appropriate recommendations. Don’t wait!! Hearing isn’t just our body's ability to hear sound, it's also our brain's ability to interpret that sound. If not acted upon in time, hearing loss can lead to certain parts of the brain (the hearing receptors) atrophying - they can no longer comprehend what a sound is. In other words, if not treated soon enough, it doesn’t matter how loud a hearing device can make a sound, the brain will not be able to interpret it.
But wait! Everything may not be all doom and gloom. Hearing loss can also be caused by something much more benign and treatable - a build up of ear wax!
Now, cerumen (ear wax) is actually perfectly natural and serves the vital function of protecting our fragile eardrum from foreign particles, but too much, or a build up of cerumen can lead to unwanted ear pressure and even loss of hearing.
Q-Tips and ear candling are popular ‘treatments’ for the removal of ear wax but they actually do more harm than good. They can often compound the problem or in extreme cases lead to damaging of the tympanic membrane.
Heroes of Hearing offers a gentle, non-destructive method of ear wax (cerumen) removal. Cerumen removal reduces the risk of ear wax being further pushed inside the ear canal. Performed in many different ways via curette, irrigation, or suction, ear wax removal can help with overall ear health and possible increase in hearing.
If your ear canals are cleared from any type of blockage and you are still experiencing loss of hearing a comprehensive hearing evaluation would be recommended to discover where the hearing issue is located and if the appropriate treatment option would be surgery, medication, or professional hearing aids.
Again, Q-tips or ear candling are not recommended for cleaning out ears. These methods could compound the problem and/or lead to damaging your eardrum.
Benefits of Hearing Care:
- Reduced pain and discomfort - Improved Clarity - Improved Social Engagement - Reduced Risk of Alzheimer's Disease - Reduced Anxiety - Reduced Cognitive Decline - Improved Hearing

ADDITIONAL UPGRADE SERVICES
THE HEARING SCREENING
Once both ear canals are cleared from any blockage, if you are still noticing a lack in clarity or hearing, a basic Hearing Screening will be recommended. This screening is performed in a soundproof booth where your hearing will be tested at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz, and 4000 Hz to determine if there is damage to the hair cilia in the cochlea. The findings during this process will help guide our practitioner to determine if a Comprehensive Hearing Evaluation will be needed.
This is where the hearing practitioner will test more frequencies to get the best picture of what you are hearing auditorily. A Cognitive Exam will be administered where the practitioner will discover your most comfortable volume level, the softest you can still understand a word, where sound becomes uncomfortable and your brain's ability to interpret words at an appropriate volume level. Their findings during this process will help guide them to determine if your appropriate treatment option would be surgery, medication, or a professional hearing aid.
Tinnitus assessment is like a personalized detective mission for those experiencing ringing or buzzing in their ears. During this evaluation, your healthcare provider will chat with you about your medical history, give your ears a thorough checkup, and even have you listen to different sounds. They'll also ask about how tinnitus affects your daily life. Based on this, you might be a great candidate for treatment options like habituation therapy, biofeedback therapy, or even using hearing aids to make your life more peaceful. It's all about finding the best solution just for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is hearing care safe?
Of course! Hearing care is one of the largest, non-invasive, drugless and safest form of health care available. Statistically patient risk is substantially lower when receiving hearing care by a licensed hearing practitioner as opposed to a friend or family member cleaning out your ears can pose a greater risk.
How long will my visit take?
This all depends on the length and severity of your condition, however, most first visits may last as much as 45 minutes. Follow-up visits are much less, often as little as 15-30 minutes.
How often will I need to return?
At the end of your visit, your hearing practitioner will determine the best course of treatment for your specific needs. The frequency in which you receive hearing care is strictly up to the professional judgment of the practitioner and will vary from individual to individual depending on your presenting condition and overall goals. Just as regular visits to the dentist are necessary for good dental hygiene, routine visits to a hearing specialist are also important for proper hearing and health maintenance.
If I need hearing aids can you help me?
Yes, this is one of our specialties. If hearing aids are determined as the best treatment option for you and after your complete comprehensive hearing evaluation, the practitioner will program a pair of hearing aids for you to demo. This gives you an opportunity to understand what is happening with your hearing and how it is affecting the brain. Selecting the look, color, connectivity, and battery options will then be discussed as you select professional state of the art hearing aids personalized for you.
How old do I need to be to get wax removed?
If you are under 18 year old you'll need to be seen by a clinic that does pediatric care. Currently Heroes of Hearing is only servicing those that are 18 year and older.
